History of the Video Console Gaming Systems Through Seven Generations

A video gaming system is an interactive electronic device which is used for playing video games on a personal computer.

The honor of being the first video console game lies with the Magnavox Odyssey which was invented by Ralph H. Baer in 1972. This game met with only moderate success and was soon succeeded in popularity by ‘Pong’ which was an arcade game which was released by Atari. Therefore, these two games along with their close successors like Odyssey 100, Odyssey 200, Smash and Sears which formed the first generation of video console gaming systems in the world. This was followed by the second generation games in 1976 and these were equipped with the Video Entertainment System (VES) which comprised of cartridges along with ROM to store instructions.

The third generation of the video console gaming systems emerged after a long hiatus in 1983 after having witnessed two major crashes. This generation marked the advent of the Japanese company Nintendo into the market in form of NES, Nintendo entertainment system in 1985 as well as its hit game the Super Mario Bros. The fourth generation did not witness the release of any particular game but saw an improvement in the storage capacity as well as technology with regards to the video console games. The fifth generation video console games were the Atari Jaguar, 3DO, the Nintendo 64, PlayStation by Sony as well as the Sega Saturn.

The sixth generation was probably the most revolutionary generation with regards to the video console gaming industry as it was during this generation that the DVDs were used for storage for the first time in the game media. It was also during this generation that three of the most popular video console games were released namely PS2 by Sony, Xbox by Microsoft and GameCube by Nintendo. These video console games were further advanced in the current generation namely the seventh generation but have still retained their popularity as the most sought-after gaming consoles in the world. The prominent gaming consoles in the seventh, which also happens to be the latest, generation are the PS3 by Sony, the Xbox 360 by Microsoft and the Wii by Nintendo.

What’s Not To Love About Console Games?

Console games are specifically a physical device that has a controller or joystick that you, the user use to manipulate the game itself. Technology in console games have evolved to where the games are now on a compact disc and the game comes through your television or computer screen.

If you are like many parents, your child has been nagging you for the latest and great console unit and game; but you do not want to spend that money on something that is just for your child and no one else. Console games are hotter than ever and contrary to popular belief, they are not just for adolescents.

Take Nintendo’s Wii games for example. With the Wii, the user, whether the user is child or adult, has to physically get up off the couch and move to play the game. The Wii has even released several weight loss and fitness console games to help not only children but also adults to get into shape. Nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities are also using Nintendo’s Wii console game to help their patients get up and moving again. If you are an adult and fitness really is not your priority, try other games such as Rock Band where you can fulfill your fantasy of being a rock star; or try cooking games to where you can be a gourmet chef. The possibilities are virtually endless to what you can play.

If you are purchasing a game for someone who already has, a console and you see all these codes E, T, MA, A/O, and do not know what they mean, maybe this will help. Console games come with a censorship rating that is determined by the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board). E stands for Everyone; meaning just that. Everyone from two to one hundred and two can play this game. T stands for Teen; meaning that the game contains violence, language, or other content that is not appropriate for younger gamers. MA or M stands for Mature; meaning that the game is not suited for anyone under the age of 17. A/O stands for Adult Only; meaning that the game contains violence, obscene language, and\or nudity and sexual scenes and are only suited for adults. Please do not be spooked by all these ratings to remember. They are in place to keep you and your child safe.

These types of games have also gotten a ‘bad rap’ so to speak, about how kids are addicted to them; they are the cause of childhood obesity; and what have you. Nevertheless, in all actuality, console games are great for hand-eye coordination, cognitive skills, and in some case reflexes and fitness. Console games, as with anything else, should be enjoyed in moderation; limit activity to an hour or two, not excessive like five to eight straight hours of play. Think of it like coffee; one cup wakes you up whereas four or five cups of coffee has your heart racing and hands shaking. Console games are no different. One hour will help you get fit or help your child’s skills; whereas four or five straight hours hurts the muscles or can cause damage to your child’s eyes, hands, neck, and other areas.

Console games are a great thing to use on family game night. What better way to bring a family together than by playing a friendly game where mom can beat the daughter for the title of bowling champion or father and son duke it out to see who the rock star in the family is?

PC Vs Console Gaming

In the gaming world, there are several options to choose from when it comes to the platform the game is being played on. There are PC games, and there are console games. The difference lies within the way the game is played.

Gaming is literally a lifestyle choice so each person prefers a slightly different approach when it comes to the way they play a game. Some like computer games, because computers allow them to customize the way they play the game along with certain tweaks in visual details and controls.

Consoles don’t demand that you make such tweaks, since they’re built with only games in mind. So when a game comes out and it’s destined for PlayStation, then, if you own such a console, you’re certain you can play that game.

But when a game comes out and it’s made for PCs, then you have to check on what the system requirements that game has in order to be played properly. Since games rely heavily on the specs, or hardware of the “console” they’re run, for PC users this would mean there’s a constant struggle to stay ahead of the gaming developer world and build or purchase the ultimate gaming computer.

In certain cases, it’s a lot easier to escape this struggle by purchasing a console and not having to worry if your system meets the necessary minimum hardware in order to run a game.

The downside to consoles is, in my opinion, the lack of precision in movements and control. For instance, if you were to play a shooter game or FPS for short, it would be really hard to aim at the opponents using a game pad.

On the other hand, when using a computer, it’s really easy to aim using your mouse at the opponents since you can fine tune the mouse sensitivity and actually get the mouse to work at what speed you require.

Some peripherals allow you to adjust that sensitivity right in the gaming environment and those are called gaming peripherals. These are built only with PCs in mind.

Consoles on the other hand have developed in recent years to create a more engaging environment for the player.

We have seen a lot of new advancements in this area from the Wii remote, allowing you to physically “swing” a golf club, or in the Kinect world, actually detecting your body movements to interact in the gaming world. This means that a console user might get a bit more exercise than a regular PC gamer.

Also, there are certain games which might not work on consoles, like strategy games. These games rely heavily on the use of a computer mouse for unit selection and issuing commands.

There are a lot of advantages to PC gaming as well as console gaming, and there are specific games that can be played on both platforms, without the possibility of moving from one type to the other. It’s a matter of level of engagement or immersion that each gamer requires that he get from the game itself.
